Andrew Lumsden

Grand Camp Maisie

Andrew Lumsden (1941-2023) was on the steering Committee of the Gay Liberation Front, instigated the founding of Gay News in the early 1970s, and was its Editor  when the paper closed in 1983. Between 1984 and 1987 Andrew wrote as an out gay journalist and worked as the News Editor and Associate Editor at the The New Statesman.

Andrew was an artist, tour guide, writer, and was a visible activist for LGBTQ+ and oppressed communities throughout his life, leading campaigns and bringing people together well into his seventies and eighties.

Andrew never had much money but shortly before he died he inherited money from Eric Thompson who had been an LGBTQ activist in the 1950s and 1960s; they agreed how the money should be used. The project was called Grand Camp Maisie after a nickname for Andrew.

In October 2024 Grand Camp Maisie put out a call for funding proposals and received applications for arts and activists projects from the LGBTQ+ community, accepting a wide range of definitions of the words art and activist.

Funds were awarded in Spring 2025.
